Cashew
Sunday, 11 Jan, we walked into the Best Friends rescue in SoHo and walked out with a new 4-year old (ish) roommate. They called her Blossom: we called her “cat” and awaited further instructions. In time, as promised, “cat” blossomed into a legume drupe seed.
First week
She came recently spayed, so she wore a cone for the first 10 days or so. Cute all the same, but it seemed to meaningfully impact her depth perception and field of view. I’ll miss her soft collisions with chair legs and ledges.
For our adoption, the shelter gave us some of their litter to maintain continuity in the home. I’m happy to report her first pee happened that same night. We ran low on the litter shortly into the week, though, so I must also report her first and second partial floor poops a few days later.
Over the week, she decided on her favorite places to nest: our dining chair and the big window sill. Fine selections. But we figured her climbing and scratching instincts would kick in as soon as it was inconvenient for us. To preempt, we purchased and built what I believe to be an enormous cat tree for a 1 BR apartment. She’s still getting used to the free real estate. Churu helps a lot!
To come
Alisa really hopes she can become a lap cat. It’s too early to tell, but I think she has it in her!
Now that her wounds have healed up, we can also get her playing more with toys. She isn’t interested in everything, but early signs are promising!
